Afghanistan: terrorism or tourism?
There’s more to Afghanistan than Helmland Province and the Taliban, and I’m hatching a plan to go ski mountaineering there in May and June 2010.
Until the Soviet invasion in 1979 Afghanistan was a ‘secret spot’ for mountaineers and tourists. The Hindu Kush and Pamirs, in the Taliban free North East of the country, are a range of mountains reaching 7500m into the sky. This stunning area is accessible from Tajikistan (don’t have to go via Kabul), and safe. Only about five mountaineering teams have been there in the last thirty years, and I am planning to take an all female team with between 4 and 6 members.
The Afghan ambassador in London is fully supportive (and very excited) about the expedition and ‘Mountain Unity’ (an Afghan mountaineering charity) are helping with logistics. We will be using at least one of the newly French trained Afghan mountain leaders for route finding. |
